I am a firm believer in the word sanctuary. Every person needs a sanctuary where they can go to be completely themselves and weather the many storms life brings in. Our sanctuaries may be on our favorite trail in the woods, in a chapel, or by the ocean. But what about having your very own sanctuary that you can completely personalize? One that you can have all to yourself every day and access to 24/7?
My bedroom is one of my favorite sanctuaries that I have because it reflects all the things that make me who I am, and it’s a place I go home to relax. Want your very own personal sanctuary in your home? Here’s how:
Pick a color scheme that fits you
What colors reflect your personality type? What colors inspire you? What colors relax you?
If you’re high energy and work well under pressure, vibrant colors of pinks and oranges might make you feel relaxed and more organic. Maybe you’re more of a naturalistic girl that likes earth tones to feel like you're in nature where your Zen is.
For me, I picked grays, whites, blacks, and a light tan for the accent color. My whole day at work requires me to be flexible and deviate from the expected. I like coming home to nice cool colors with consistent color schemes that are predictable, clean, and don’t make me feel like I’m at work.
Soft lights are dreamier and save us from the harshness of fluorescent lights our apartments are often cursed with. Invest in a lamp that fits your color scheme and some candles to light when you need some flame therapy. Find some fairy lights from Ikea.
My favorite candles are the aromatherapy candles from Bath & Body works (especially the Eucalyptus stress relief one!). Not only do they give you the perfect lighting for your sanctuary, but if you breathe deeply, their different aromas give you sanity!

Have a favorite poet? Design a favorite poem of theirs to print and frame. Saw an art piece that inspired you at that exhibit you went to? Get an 8x10 of it. Invest time into your decoration because it ties the room together and displays a piece of your soul. Hang artwork that inspires you. Frame photos on the walls of people that love you unconditionally.
My artwork I’ve collected from art exhibits is my favorite part about my bedroom sanctuary. I chose to hang Picasso’s “Dora Maar” above my bed because it ties in my sassy and eccentric side to an already relaxed and cool atmosphere.
You come home from a long day of work or school and what’s the first thing you want to do? That’s right. Sink down into the depth of you bed. Make your bed the comfiest place you know. Invest in softer sheets, find a fluffy throw blanket, have three pillows to snuggle up against.
Need a better mattress? I found a full-sized memory foam mattress from Walmart.com for $149.00 and it’s honestly the best mattress I’ve owned. You don’t need to spend a ton of for comfy (and quality!) assets.
Show your feet some love—find a fluffy white rug for your feet to greet in the morning. Maybe that vibrant bohemian rug sparks joy after a long day. Your room can be a safe-haven from the floor to the ceiling. A rug gives us a designated place to meditate, cry, or pray when we need to.
Once you have these basic staples, you can add on to your kingdom. Snuggle into your cozy bed with a book and a candle burning, and relax.
